Drive Day with Stops

Antelope Canyon

This morning started out by getting packed up and pulling out of camp and heading towards the Grand Canyon with a few stops along the way. The first stop was at Lower Antelope Canyon where we did a guided tour. The canyon is rather narrow and deep with interesting carved rock surfaces in bright red and orange hues. We tried very hard to capture the essence of what we were seeing and experiencing in our photos, but there is no way to do so. It was difficult to whittle down the nearly 300 pictures we took in the underground canyons so we are sharing quite a few.

After the hour plus adventure in Antelope Canyon, we stopped at a Walmart in Page, AZ to stock up on a few things (especially water as we have been consuming that by the gallons!). We then continued a short distance to Horseshoe Bend where the Colorado River makes nearly a complete loop around a sandstone escarpment. It’s impressive how the Colorado River has carved so much into the landscape.

Horseshoe Bend

After the stop at Horseshoe Bend, we hit the road for the longer portion of our drive. Much of the drive was through different chapters of the Navajo Nation. Small communities dotted the landscape and it was hard to imagine how generations of people have lived in the barren desert. A 24 mile section of road  that was in very poor shape paired with gusty winds made for difficult driving conditions. Both of us were pretty tense and there was very little talking, but we survived.

We passed through the east entrance of the Grand Canyon and stopped at the Desert View overlook to get our first look at the canyon. There really are no words to describe the vastness of it. Trivia Question for Today: How long is the Grand Canyon?

From there, we made our way through the park to the campground where we got checked in and made quick work of setting up camp. A cocktail, dinner, and doing a load of laundry were the priorities for the evening. After dinner clean up, we received a Facetime call from our friends who are camping at the Carmel By The River RV Park, which is practically in our backyard. We are bummed that we are missing them this year, but we are glad that everyone is getting to spend time enjoying the outdoors.

Tomorrow, we look forward to renting e-bikes and biking the 13 mile trail along the south rim of the canyon.

Trivia Answer: The Grand Canyon is 277 miles long and averages one mile deep from rim to river!
